Free Cancer Screenings
Cancer Services Program of Albany and Rensselaer County
Women and men with little or no health insurance may be eligible for free cancer screenings through the Cancer Services Program (formerly known as the Healthy Living Partnership). The program offers free breast, cervical and colorectal screenings, as well as prostate education.
The Cancer Services Program is funded by the New York State Department of Health and the Center for Disease Control and has many local partners and providers who provide services to our patients. St. Peter’s Hospital has been conducting community cancer screenings since 1997 when it became a founding sponsor of the Healthy Capital District Initiative. This legacy of care for the community continues today with St. Peter’s Health Partners having recently been awarded the contract for this program through March 2018.
Women who are uninsured and 40 years of age or older can receive a no cost breast exam, pap smear/pelvic exam and mammogram through participating OB/GYNs and other physicians in the area. The mammogram is provided by St. Peter's and other local hospitals, as well as imaging centers in the area at no cost to the patient.
Men and women over age 50 are eligible for colorectal cancer screening. Average risk patients are screened with an easy take home FIT kit (fecal immunochemical kit). If the patient has a family history of colon cancer, or personal history of colon cancer, adenomatous polyps, Crohn's disease, inflammatory bowel disease or colitis, the patient will be scheduled for a colonoscopy.
If screening tests find something abnormal, diagnostic services are available through the CSP for eligible men and women at no cost.
If breast, cervical, or colon cancer is found, eligible men and women may be able to enroll in the NYS Medicaid Cancer Treatment program to receive full Medicaid coverage for the entire time they are being treated for cancer.
Men diagnosed with Prostate Cancer by a doctor in this program may be able to enroll in the Medicaid Cancer Treatment Program. The CSP does not pay for prostate cancer screening or diagnostic tests.
If patients have barriers to receiving care, the Cancer Services Program also offers supportive case management services.
Screenings may be done at an earlier age if there is a family history of breast or colorectal cancer.
