Advanced Robotic Surgery
In early 2004, St. Peter's Hospital became the first hospital in northeastern New York to begin using a very sophisticated, computer-enhanced surgical system. St. Peter's surgeons have performed more procedures using the da Vinci® robotic system than any other facility in Upstate New York.
This new system integrates robotics and extremely sophisticated computer technology with the skills of the surgeon. It allows the surgeon to perform minimally invasive procedures in a manner never experienced before. More importantly, this system allows for safer and more precise surgeries, meaning less discomfort and quicker recovery for patients.
The da Vinci® system is a totally "intuitive" laparoscopic surgical robot. The system is so precise that the instruments recheck their positions by computer 1,500 times per second. The system consists of several components: a surgeon console, patient-side cart, instruments and image processing console.
Our surgeons also perform minimally invasive, laparoscopic prostatectomy, and were the first in the region to do so in 2002. These types of surgeries result in less scarring and fewer complications for patients.
